How Much Does Sewer Line Replacement Cost per Foot?

Santa Clarita Sewer Repair explains what goes into the per-foot price of sewer lateral work in Santa Clarita Valley homes — the method, the length and depth of the line, what sits on top of it, and the items priced on their own — and why the honest answer is a range from the estimator for one specific lateral.

Why the answer is a range, not one number

Sewer lateral work is priced mostly by the foot, but a foot of lateral under a lawn is not the same job as a foot under a driveway, and a line 4 feet down is not the same as one 8 feet down. The method matters too: open trench, pipe bursting and lining each have their own per-foot range. Then come the items priced on their own, such as the camera inspection that decides the method, a new cleanout, or the section under the street.

The per-foot price is set by the method, the depth and what sits on top of the pipe, not by the length alone.

The estimator on this page takes the method, the length, the site condition and the options, and shows the typical Santa Clarita Valley range for that combination. A plumber prices the actual line after the camera inspection, and the range is where that price usually lands.

The three methods and how their ranges compare

Method What happens Best suited to Place in the price range
Open trench the old pipe is dug up and new pipe laid on bedding lawn routes, collapsed pipe, sags that need regrading wide range, rises fast under hardscape or at depth
Pipe bursting a head breaks the old pipe outward and pulls new HDPE in behind it continuous pipe under driveways or landscaping middle of the range, two pits instead of a trench
Lining (cured-in-place pipe) a resin liner is cured inside the old pipe round, passable pipe with cracks or root-filled joints often the lowest per foot when the pipe qualifies

The order is not fixed: a short lawn run can cost less by trench, and a deep run under concrete can cost less by bursting. The camera inspection decides which methods are possible before any comparison makes sense.

Site conditions that move the per-foot rate

Two conditions change the rate the most. Hardscape over the route, such as a driveway, a patio or a walkway, means cutting and replacing concrete for a trench, or choosing a trenchless method that avoids it. Depth raises the cost of any excavation, because a deeper trench or pit needs shoring and moves more soil; on sloping lots in Canyon Country and parts of Saugus, laterals can run more than 6 feet deep near the street.

Items priced on their own

A camera inspection with video is usually the first item and is priced separately. Hydro jetting and root cutting clear a line before lining or as maintenance; they do not repair cracked or broken pipe, and roots usually return. A new two-way cleanout gives access in both directions. A spot repair fixes one section. The section under the street, in the public right of way, is the largest single item when it is needed, because it brings an excavation permit, traffic control and street restoration.

Getting a range for a specific Santa Clarita lateral

The most useful desk estimate starts with the length from the house to the street, what the line runs under, and roughly how deep it is. Adding the likely method and the separate items in the estimator shows the typical Santa Clarita Valley range for that lateral. The range becomes a real price only after a camera inspection shows the pipe's material, condition and path.
