Santa Clarita Sewer Repair: Full Sewer Line Replacement in Santa Clarita

Santa Clarita Sewer Repair covers full sewer lateral replacement by open trench for Santa Clarita Valley homes — the old clay, Orangeburg, cast iron or early plastic line dug out from the house to the connection, new PVC laid on compacted bedding at a true slope, a two-way cleanout added, and the trench inspected before it is closed.

When digging is the right answer

Trenchless methods follow the old pipe's path. When the path itself is wrong — a belly where the line sags, a lateral laid too flat, a route under a building addition, or a pipe so collapsed nothing can pass — open trench is the method that fixes it. It is also often the lowest-cost full replacement on a shallow line under lawn, where the trench is easy to dig and restore.

Situation Open trench Trenchless
Belly or wrong slope Fixes it Follows the old slope
Shallow line under lawn Often the lowest cost Similar or higher cost
Line under a driveway or mature tree Disruptive and costly to restore Usually preferred
Collapsed pipe nothing can pass Works Bursting sometimes, lining no
Pipe route needs to change Works Not possible

The trench, the pipe and the slope

  • Utilities marked through 811 (DigAlert) and the line located end to end with the camera sonde.
  • Trench dug along the lateral, typically 18–24 inches wide, to the depth of the pipe.
  • Old pipe removed section by section; clay and Orangeburg come out in pieces.
  • Bedding of sand or fine gravel compacted under and around the new pipe.
  • New PVC (SDR 35 or Schedule 40, as the permit specifies) laid at a continuous slope, commonly at least 1/4 inch per foot for a 4 inch line.
  • Cleanout set near the house or the property line.
  • Inspection of the open trench and a camera run of the new line, then backfill in compacted lifts.

Open trench: bedding, slope and backfill. In an open trench, the new pipe sits on compacted bedding at a steady downhill slope, and the backfill above is compacted in layers so it does not settle.

What the numbered markers show

  1. A layer of sand or fine gravel bedding under and around the pipe supports it evenly along its length.
  2. The pipe is laid on a steady downhill slope toward the main, with no low spots, at no less than the plumbing code's minimum fall.
  3. Backfill goes in and is compacted in layers, so the ground above does not settle and pull the pipe out of grade.

What the yard looks like during and after

The trench and the spoil pile occupy the lateral's path for two to four days. Lawns are re-sodded or re-seeded along the line, sprinkler lines cut by the trench are repaired, and concrete walkways the line crosses are saw-cut and patched. Plants along the route are lifted and replanted where possible.

An open trench is the only method that can change the pipe's path and its slope.

Pipe materials and what replaces them

Most full replacements in the valley remove vitrified clay from the 1950s–70s, Orangeburg from the late 1940s to early 1970s, cast iron under older slabs, or early ABS from the 1970s–80s. The new lateral is PVC, with transition couplings at the house connection and at the main. Where the lateral passes under the house, the replacement often stops at a new cleanout just outside the foundation.

Sewer Line Replacement (Open Trench) — common questions

How much does full sewer line replacement cost?

About $100–$250 per foot by open trench in 2026, so a 60 ft lateral lands roughly at $6,000–$15,000 before hardscape or depth adjustments. The section under the street, if it is included, adds $3,000–$9,000.

Does the city inspect a new sewer lateral?

A full lateral replacement typically needs a permit and an inspection before backfill. The City of Santa Clarita or LA County permit center confirms what applies to a specific address.
